What is Tummy tuck?

A saggy belly and a relaxed abdominal wall are consequences of aging, pregnancies, and excessive weight gain. Abdominoplasty is a procedure that aims to tighten the skin and muscles of the abdominal wall to achieve a flat and firm stomach. This procedure is particularly intended for women after pregnancy or people who have lost a significant amount of weight.

Different Abdominoplasty Techniques:

  • - Isolated abdominal liposuction
  • - Mini abdominoplasty
  • - Complete abdominoplasty or abdominoplasty with umbilical transposition
  • - "Fleur de Lys" abdominoplasty

Abdominoplasty / Tummy tuck Definition

Abdominoplasty refers to restorative or aesthetic surgery for enhancing the appearance of the abdomen. Also known as abdominal plastic surgery or abdominal dermolipectomy, this procedure reshapes the abdomen by removing excess fat, skin, and by restructuring and strengthening the muscles of the abdominal wall. Abdominoplasty is performed for aesthetic purposes but can also serve a functional purpose by helping the patient regain comfort and muscle repair. The most commonly performed abdominoplasty involves removing a large strip of skin, typically covering the region between the navel and the pubis, according to the specific condition. The underlying, healthy skin generally located above the navel is redraped downward to reconstruct an abdominal wall with good-quality skin. The navel is preserved and repositioned in its normal position through an incision made in the lowered skin.

When is Tummy tuck used?

The main indications for abdominoplasty are skin laxity with or without stretch marks, often accompanied by excess fat. Abdominoplasty addresses three levels:

  • - Reducing excess fat in the abdominal area, a common condition in men around their forties and in women after menopause.
  • - Reducing excess skin to combat the abdominal apron resulting from pregnancies or weight loss.
  • - Tightening the rectus muscles. The separation of the abdominal muscles (rectus diastasis) can be congenital or result from pregnancies.

Objectives

The goal of this procedure is to remove the most damaged skin (stretched, scarred, or with stretch marks) and tighten the surrounding healthy skin. Additionally, it can be combined with the treatment of localized fat deposits through liposuction and the management of underlying abdominal muscle issues (diastasis, hernia).

What happens after treatment?

Postoperative Care for Abdominoplasty

Most often, a compressive dressing and drains should be kept for one to two days before being replaced by a compression garment to be worn for 1 month, day and night, 2 months if muscle repair has been performed. The sutures are, in the majority of cases, absorbable and will disappear after 2 to 3 weeks.

Postoperative recovery can be quite painful, especially when significant abdominal wall tension has been restored. Pain relievers will be prescribed systematically in the first few days. Dressings should be planned for about two weeks after abdominal plasty. Wearing a support garment is recommended for 4 to 8 weeks, day and night. A 2 to 4-week work leave is recommended. The scar is often pink during the first 2 to 3 months, then it usually fades after the third month, gradually, over 1 to 3 years. It should not be exposed to the sun before 3 months. The practice of sports activities can be gradually resumed from the sixth postoperative week.

How long do results last?

Duration of Surgery/ Clinic Stay

The result can be judged from one year after the surgery. It is indeed necessary to have the patience to wait for the necessary time for the scar to fade and to have good monitoring during this period. Regarding the scar, it should be noted that while it generally fades over time, it cannot completely disappear. In this regard, it should not be forgotten that if the surgeon performs the sutures, the scar itself is the result of the patient. Beyond the often noticeable aesthetic improvement, abdominal plastic surgeries generally provide a significant improvement in comfort. In addition, this functional improvement and psychological well-being help in adjusting your weight balance. In any case, this is a major and delicate surgery, for which the quality of the indication and the rigor of the surgical procedure do not in any way protect against a certain number of imperfections or even complications.

Contraindication of Abdominoplasty:

Abdominal muscles do not replace weight loss or an appropriate exercise program. Abdominal plastic surgery cannot correct stretch marks outside the excised areas. Stretch marks can be removed or improved only if they are located on the excess skin areas that will be excised, typically the areas treated below the navel.

Abdominoplasty, or tummy tuck, tightens the abdominal muscles, removes excess skin and fat from the midsection, and contours the abdomen. This procedure is considered a cosmetic surgery.
