BREAST LIFT - BREAST PTOSIS & BREAST REDUCTION TECHNIQUES, DEFINITION, POSTOPERATIVE CARE

Breast lifting, also known as mastopexy, is a cosmetic surgical procedure that aims to lift and firm breasts that have lost their firmness and natural position. This procedure can help women regain a more youthful and firm appearance of their breasts, and can also improve their self-confidence.

Breast lifting (also referred to as breast ptosis) is an operation that is performed to correct sagging breasts. It is intended for women who, after one or more pregnancies, following breastfeeding or after significant weight loss, have seen their breasts sag and lose their volume.

    Goals of Breast Lifting

Breast lifting is a cosmetic surgical procedure aimed at lifting sagging breasts and giving them an aesthetic shape and support. The areolas will no longer point downwards and the "saggy" appearance that the skin of the breasts can have will be removed.

The surgical procedure for breast ptosis

The breast lift or breast reduction involves removing excess glandular tissue. A volume in harmony with the silhouette and according to the patient's wishes is preserved. This residual glandular volume is lifted, concentrated, and reshaped. It is then necessary to adapt the skin envelope, which involves removing the excess skin to ensure good support and a good shape to the new breasts. The edges of the skin thus cut are then sutured.

The scars are in the shape of an inverted T: one around the nipple, a vertical scar, and a horizontal one in the submammary fold. They begin to fade between four and six months.

The operation lasts about 1h30, under general anesthesia. Absorbable sutures that dissolve on their own are placed. An appropriate dressing is applied for a few days.

The scars often take the shape of an inverted T with three components:

    • Peri-areolar around the perimeter of the areola between the brown skin and the white skin
    • Vertical between the lower pole of the areola and the submammary fold
    • Horizontal, concealed in the submammary fold.

The length of the horizontal scar is proportional to the extent of breast hypertrophy and ptosis. Sometimes, especially when breast hypertrophy and ptosis are moderate, a so-called "vertical" method can be performed which allows eliminating the transverse scar in the submammary fold and reducing the scar to its peri-areolar and vertical components.

  • In which cases is a breast lift applied?

The breast lift is aimed at women who have sagging breasts or whose areola is too low. This sagging of the breasts can be related to pregnancy, aging, or weight fluctuation. It is often associated with the placement of implants (breast augmentation).

  • Breast Lift Surgery

What type of anesthesia is used for a breast lift?

Breast lift surgeries are systematically performed under general anesthesia.

  • DURATION OF SURGERY/ STAY IN CLINIC

The breast lift or breast reduction surgery typically lasts about 3 hours, depending on the case. A hospital stay of 2 to 3 days is usually necessary.

  • Breast Lift Results

It takes about 3-6 months to see the final result. Scars begin to fade after 6 months. More significant physical activity is possible after 4 weeks, lifting heavy objects after 6 weeks. Sauna, solarium, steam room, and direct sun exposure should be avoided for 2 months after surgery.

The result of the breast lift or reduction can be judged after one year. The chest most often has a harmonious, symmetrical, and natural shape. Beyond the local improvement, this intervention generally has a favorable impact on weight balance, sports practice, clothing possibilities, and psychological state. It is important to have the patience to wait for the necessary time for the scars to fade and to maintain good surveillance during this period. The operated breast remains natural and sensitive, particularly to hormonal variations.

  • Convalescence

Postoperative recovery is generally not very painful, requiring only simple painkillers. Swelling (edema) and bruising (bruises) of the breasts as well as discomfort when lifting the arms are commonly observed. The first dressing is removed after 48 hours and replaced by a lighter dressing, creating a sort of custom-made elastic bustier. After 3-4 days, you will feel better, with less pain and swelling. You should rest during the first week and you will need to limit your activity, including lifting heavy objects for 2 weeks. No physical activity that requires significant effort for 1 to 2 months. Wearing a special bra will be recommended for 1 month.

  • About

Mastopexy without implants is a surgical intervention that aims to reshape and firm up the breasts without the use of implants. This option is often preferred by women wanting to regain toned and lifted breasts while maintaining their natural volume.

    Goals of the Surgery

The goal of breast lifting is to correct breast ptosis and any potential asymmetry to obtain two harmonious, reduced, elevated, symmetrical, and reshaped breasts, in accordance with the patient's morphology.

    Mastopexy without Implant Procedure

This procedure involves removing excess tissue, preserving a volume in harmony with the patient's silhouette, and reshaping this residual volume. The adaptation of the skin envelope requires the removal of excess skin to ensure good support and a beautiful contour to the new breasts. The incisions are then carefully sutured.

    Scars

The scars often take the form of an inverted T, with a periareolar component, a vertical one, and a horizontal one hidden in the submammary fold. The length of the horizontal scar depends on the extent of hypertrophy and ptosis. In some cases of moderate ptosis, a vertical method can be used to eliminate the transverse scar and limit the scars to their periareolar and vertical components.

  • Breast lifting restores shape and support to the breasts.

Indications for Breast Lifting without Implants

Breast lifting without implants is indicated when there is sagging of the breasts (breast ptosis) associated with a significant or medium volume, and sometimes with a certain degree of asymmetry.

  • «ALT

    Anesthesia

Before surgery, the type of anesthesia used will be discussed with the surgeon. Mastopexy without implants can be performed under general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The choice will depend on various factors, including patient preferences and the surgeon's recommendation based on the complexity of the procedure.

  • Duration of the Procedure and Hospital Stay

Breast lifting or breast reduction typically lasts around 3 hours depending on the case. A hospital stay of 2 to 3 days is usually necessary.

  • Results

The results of breast lifting without implants gradually reveal themselves, with a reduction in bruising and swelling. The breasts regain a higher position and a firmer appearance, while maintaining their natural volume. Results vary among individuals, but most women notice a significant improvement in the shape and appearance of their breasts.

    Long-term Maintenance

To maintain results over the long term, it is important to take care of your lifted breasts without implants. This includes regularly wearing a suitable bra, moisturizing the skin, and using creams recommended by the surgeon to preserve the elasticity and health of the skin.

  • Convalescence

After surgery, it is normal to experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the breasts. The surgeon may prescribe medications to manage pain and recommend wearing a compression bra to support the breasts during healing. It is essential to carefully follow the postoperative instructions provided by the surgeon and to allow enough recovery time before resuming normal daily activities.

Definition and Explanations on the Surgery

Breast lifting with implants, also known as mastopexy with breast augmentation, is a sophisticated surgical procedure that combines two techniques: breast lifting and the insertion of implants. This dual procedure aims to remove excess skin and reshape sagging breasts, while increasing their volume and fullness through the addition of implants. It represents a comprehensive solution for women looking to improve both the shape and size of their breasts, often following changes due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, or aging.

  • Diagnosis

Breast lifting with implants is generally considered in the following cases:

Breast ptosis: When the breasts are sagging and have lost their firmness due to pregnancy, breastfeeding, significant weight loss, or aging, a breast lift can be performed to raise and firm up the breasts.

Loss of breast volume: If a woman wishes to increase the volume of her breasts in addition to lifting them, the insertion of breast implants can be combined with the lift to achieve more satisfying results.

Breast asymmetry: When the breasts present a significant difference in size or shape, breast lifting with implants can help correct this asymmetry and achieve a more balanced appearance of the breasts.

Breast reconstruction: In the context of breast reconstruction after mastectomy or to correct congenital breast malformations, breast lifting with implants can be used to restore the shape and volume of the breasts.

  • Lifespan of Breast Implants

The lifespan of breast implants generally varies between 10 and 15 years, although many factors can influence their longevity. It is important to note that implants are not considered permanent devices. Over time, changes such as weight loss, pregnancy, or the natural aging of the body can affect the appearance of the breasts with implants. Moreover, the risks of complications, such as rupture or capsular contracture, can increase over time, sometimes necessitating the replacement or removal of the implants. Regular follow-up visits with your plastic surgeon are essential to monitor the condition of the implants and ensure long-term health and safety.

  • Results

Once the bruising and swelling have subsided, the results of the breast lift with implants begin to reveal themselves. The breasts are firmer, better shaped, and have a more youthful appearance. The breast implants add volume, creating a more balanced and feminine silhouette. Women often regain increased self-confidence and satisfaction with their new appearance.

    Long-term Maintenance

To maintain the results in the long term, it is important to take care of your lifted breasts with implants. This includes wearing an appropriate supportive bra, avoiding intense physical activities that could affect the breasts, and regular follow-up with the surgeon to ensure that the implants are in good condition and that there are no complications. It is also essential to perform regular self-examinations to detect any abnormalities.

  • Convalescence

After the procedure, it is normal to experience some discomfort, bruising, and swelling in the breasts. The surgeon will likely recommend wearing a compression bra for a few weeks to support the breasts and promote optimal healing. It is essential to follow the postoperative instructions provided by the surgeon, which may include medications to relieve pain, limited activities during the recovery period, and regular follow-up appointments.

Breast Reduction Surgery

  • About

    Definition

Breast reduction is a surgical procedure that involves reducing the size of the breasts by removing excess breast tissue and skin. This results in a more proportionate, comfortable, and aesthetically pleasing breast appearance.

    Procedure

Breast reduction surgery is performed in several steps. The surgeon makes carefully chosen incisions to minimize visible scarring. Excess breast tissue and skin are then removed, and the breast gland is reshaped to achieve a harmonious size and shape with the rest of the body. The nipples are also repositioned for optimal aesthetic appearance. The incisions are then closed with sutures.

  • Therapeutic Indications

Breast reduction is recommended for women who have significant breast hypertrophy. Common symptoms that may warrant breast reduction include back, neck, and shoulder pain, posture problems, skin irritations under the breasts, difficulty finding appropriate bras, and self-esteem issues related to excessively large breasts.

  • Anesthesia

Breast reduction is performed under general anesthesia, meaning you will be asleep throughout the procedure. Your comfort and safety will be ensured by an experienced medical team.

  • Duration of the Procedure

The duration of breast reduction surgery varies depending on the complexity of each individual case. Generally, the procedure takes between 2 to 4 hours, but this may vary based on the specific needs of each patient.

  • Results and Long-Term Care

The results of breast reduction surgery are typically positive and long-lasting. You will experience a significant decrease in the size of your breasts, as well as an improvement in your physical comfort and self-esteem. It is important to follow your surgeon's recommendations regarding postoperative care and follow-up appointments. By adopting a healthy lifestyle and maintaining a stable weight, you can fully enjoy the results of your breast reduction surgery in the long term.

  • Recovery

After breast reduction surgery, it is normal to experience some sensitivity, swelling, and bruising in the breasts. Your surgeon will prescribe medication to manage pain and provide detailed postoperative instructions on caring for your breasts, wearing a special bra, and avoiding certain activities during the recovery period. You can gradually resume your normal activities in the weeks following the procedure.
